Joseph Receives His Diploma !

The University of Michigan, upon confirming that Joseph completed all the graduation requirements, sent out diplomas in late June!

While the paper copy is still in the mail, they also sent them via email so you could view it on your phone.

Hike at Hanford Reach

With summer still not quite arriving in Seattle, in late June the five of us went out to Eastern Washington for another hike, this time to Hanford Reach. Most famous for where the original atomic bombs were built, it is now a wildlife refuge along the Columbia River, with a few beautiful sand dunes and mountains in the distance. It's a very nice spot; we hiked a bit more than 5 miles to the top of the tallest dune; the boys took a path down along the river for the return hike.

Jack Graduates from Newport High School

June 16 was graduation day for Newport High School!

Typical for 2020 graduations, there were no large gatherings and instead the school took a more creative approach.

In the afternoon, they streamed a ceremony with the principal, some faculty, and a few student speakers. This also included a reading of all ~450 of the graduates names with a powerpoint slide for each one.

Then in the afternoon the school hosted a "drive-through" graduation. We met a few of Jack's friends at a parking lot down the street from the high school for some photos, and then convoyed over. The school did a nice job - a few dozen teachers were there (masked!) with balloons and signs to cheer everyone on, and you drove around the parking lot, through a balloon arch, and then on to the entrance to the school where each graduate got out and had their name read and got their diploma case.

Afterwards we went out to dinner at El Gaucho, a nice steakhouse in downtown Bellevue, which was open for their first night. Escargot, crab cakes, steak, and creme brûlée.

Hike to the Top of Squak Mountain

With the weather good but still not the endless clear, sunny days of summer, we continue to find smaller hikes for our weekend days.

In early June, Joseph, Henry, and Dad hikes to the top of Squak Mountain in Issaquah. One of three mountains in Issaquah - Cougar Mountain, Squak Mountain, and Tiger Mountain, Squak has fewer trails and is less a destination as the others, but it was a very nice hike up through the woods.

It was a bit more than 2 miles to the summit, which is really just some radio towers. On the way back down we found a geocache, and, oddly, a rusted out car off the trail, well up the mountain, that was partly hidden by the overgrowth since it was left there. Judging from what we could see of the car, it looked like a 1970s or 1980s model!

Mountain Biking in Black Diamond

Saturday morning Joseph, Henry, and I went down to Black Diamond to get some mountain biking in. It was a nice morning, but the weather was supposed to turn later in the afternoon. Instead the rain came a little earlier and we got a bit wet. Nice ride though!

Hiking the Rim of Yakima Canyon

Late May saw sunny weekdays but rainy weekends. So on Sunday we drove to the other side of the mountains to get some much-needed sunshine - Yakima was sunny and 70s all day. Joseph, MJ, and I drove out and took a six-mile hike up to the rim of the canyon and along it. Very nice hike!
