Climbing Mount St. Helens

The three of us (John, Jack, Henry) were able to secure a permit to climb Mt St Helens on Sunday, July 25. Joseph and John had climbed St Helens six years ago (blog post here), but the other boys hadn't climbed it yet. The three of us had hoped to do this climb last year, but were unable to because of a nearby forest fire. This year we secured a permit for earlier in the year, and it was a beautifully clear day.

We drove down the night before and camped at Climbers' Bivouac. And were up bright and early in the morning, out of our tents by 4:45am and, after a somewhat hearty breakfast, on the trail by 5:35am.

The first part of the hike was a steady climb through the forest, and then you get to above the tree line when it really starts to get steep. There is an endless ocean of boulders to climb over (and even harder to climb down at the end of the hike!). There are great views of other Cascade volcanoes, including Mount Hood in Oregon, as well as Mount Adams which is less than 100 miles away. After getting through the boulders, you're rewarded with an equally steep climb through soft ash and pebbles. About three-and-a-half hours after starting, we reached the summit!

It's an amazing view from the top - you can see Rainier right there, with Spirit Lake as well. And the entire crater is right in front of you - you can see how it blasted out sideways from the mountain and the hole that is left. There have been some lava domes that have formed in the 40 years since the main eruption, which are growing inside the crater now.

We had the summit largely to ourselves, and stayed up for an early lunch before starting the grueling hike down. We were done by 12:30, about 7 hours after starting.

Maine Trip - Part 2 (Katahdin !!)

In Maine, we climbed to the top of Mount Katahdin, the northern endpoint of the Appalachian Trail and one of the steepest and most difficult hikes we've done. It involved a steady rise through the forest, a long steep scramble through boulders, and a hike along the tableland before a final ascent to the summit of Baxter Peak. An amazing hike we all enjoyed, though were exhausted by!

Maine Trip - Part 1 (Kennebunkport + Acadia)

In mid-July, Margaret came to visit and stay with Mary Jo, which gave John the opportunity to take the boys on a summer vacation. We chose Maine, a part of the country they hadn't been before, and did hiking as well as other activities.

Highlights of the trip included:

1. Lobster Boat in Kennebunkport - we went out on a lobster boat with a captain and a marine biologist

2. Lots of Lobster for dinners:

3. Beehive Trail in Acadia - climbing up iron rungs along the rockface

4. Six Summits Hike

Hike to six 'mountains' in the interior of Acadia National Park

 5. Bar Harbor Hotel

6. Wonderland Trail on Mt Desert Island
